The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) convened last week in New York for a two-day workshop covering a variety of subjects of common interest. The topics included the participation of NBA players in official international competitions, the international transfer of players, the Basketball without Borders youth development camps in Asia, Africa and South America, women’s basketball, the upcoming Olympic Games and the global fight against dop

FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, announced today its formal acceptance of the World Anti-doping Code.

In 1999 Mr. Stanley Roberts, an NBA player, was sanctioned by the NBA for the use of amphetamines and banned from NBA competitions for a period of two years. His subsequent attempt to register as a player for a European basketball team was stopped by FIBA which, applying its own regulations, banned him from FIBA competitions for two years based on the earlier NBA doping sanction.

The World Championship for Junior Men has been moved from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Thessaloniki, Greece. Greece stepped forward to host the event due to the recent outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the Asian region; the championship will take place on the dates foreseen, July 10 – 20, 2003.

The Board of the Euroleague, the body appointed at the General Assembly last October 4th in Madrid, held its first meeting on Saturday in Barcelona, where the following agreements have been adopted:

The assembly of the Union of European Basketball Leagues (ULEB), meeting today, July 7, 2002 in Barcelona, Spain, has approved the creation of a new European competition, the ULEB Cup, which will debut with the upcoming 2002-03 basketball season.

The fight against doping: the European Commission and the International Basketball Federation sign a convention to help keep basketball clean. The campaign 'For a clean future' launched by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is intended to raise awareness among young players and spectators of the damage to health caused by doping, and to provide information on banned substances and the penalties imposed for using them.

Following the decision taken by the Board of FIBA-Europe at its meeting today, the ULEB wishes to make the following statements:

The Board of FIBA-Europe met informally today prior to the final games of FIBA’s European Championship for Men to evaluate recent developments in its relationship with ULEB-Euroleague, and has come to the conclusions below.

The International Basketball Federation FIBA and the Union of European Basketball Leagues ULEB signed an agreement today which regulates the details of the re-unification of the two European top club competitions SuproLeague and Euroleague as of the 2001/2002 season. The agreement still has to be ratified by the General Assembly of the Standing Conference which meets on 25th – 27th May 2001.
